Mary was born in England and started dancing at about 4 years of age and has been dancing ever since!
Starting with Ballet and Character, she went on to Tap Dancing, appearing in dancing displays, variety shows and pantomime for many years, later she learnt Ballroom Dancing.
She taught Tap Dancing while living in Nairobi, Kenya and with her group of dancers was involved with entertaining the troops during the Mau Mau uprising.
After coming to NZ she took up Square & Round Dancing, Line Dancing and Clogging and taught the latter for a short time. It was through Square Dancing that she met her husband Art Shepherd. Art was one of the first teachers of Line Dancing in Christchurch and he used the same method as is used in Square Dancing, teaching basic steps and cueing the dances. Mary and Art taught Line Dance Classes together for five years, running their club called, “Cathedral City Line Dancers” which they set up in 1995.
Since Art’s death in July 2000, Mary has successfully carried on the club, following Art’s method of teaching Line Dancing.
In 2007 she was honoured with a Special Recognition Award for Services to New Zealand Line Dancing by The Beat Linedance Magazine.
This is a photo album for Mary and her Cathedral City Line Dancers. (These will be moved onto "photosheets" soon)
